Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
